After the Portuguese invaded the city of Malacca in 1511, the sultan escaped and went to a few places before finally settled down in Johor. In Johor Sultan Mahmud took his youngest son Sultan Alauddin to succeed him in Johor. Sultan Mahmud has another son Sultan Muzaffar which was brought to Perak and installed as the first ruler of Perak-Malacca dynasty.
